assuming it is simply a matter of getting a pair of reading glasses,

or even thinking they can just “tough it out”.

First, let us understand: Presbyopia is a natural signal of ocular ageing

Difficulty with near tasks: For example, when looking at a mobile phone or reading a newspaper, you need to hold the object further away to see it clearly; the closer it is, the blurrier it becomes; Noticeable asthenopia: After prolonged near work, you may experience eye soreness, dryness, headaches, or even nausea; High dependence on lighting: Near vision becomes even blurrier in dim environments, requiring brighter light to see clearly; Age-related onset: It typically begins around the age of 40, and the degree of presbyopia gradually worsens with age.

  1. Do not confuse: Presbyopia ≠ Myopia, nor is it Hyperopia

Many people believe that ‘myopic people do not get presbyopia’, which is a misconception. When myopic patients reach presbyopic age, they also experience a decline in lens accommodation; it is just that their myopic prescription offsets part of the presbyopic addition. However, with technological advancements, there are now more comfortable solutions better tailored to different needs, beyond traditional single-vision reading glasses. The key is to choose the right method rather than just putting on any pair of glasses.

Traditional correction: Reading glasses must be precisely fitted; do not buy them at random Many people buy a pair of reading glasses from a street vendor or online for convenience, which is highly discouraged. Everyone’s presbyopic addition, pupillary distance, and visual habits are different. Randomly purchased reading glasses may have an inaccurate prescription or incorrect pupillary distance, which will not only fail to relieve presbyopia but also exacerbate asthenopia and even accelerate its progression. The correct approach is: visit a qualified hospital ophthalmology department or optometry centre for presbyopic optometric refraction. The doctor will recommend the appropriate type of reading glasses based on your age, refractive status, and visual scenarios: single-vision, bifocal, or progressive addition lenses (progressive addition lenses are divided into three zones: distance, intermediate, and near, and represent the current trend in spectacle presbyopia correction).

Surgical correction: Suitable for specific groups to break free from glasses dependence If wearing reading glasses is inconvenient and your physical condition meets the requirements, you can also consider surgical correction for presbyopia. There are currently two common surgical methods, each suited to different patient profiles:

Every 20 to 30 minutes of near work, take a break and look into the distance to allow the ciliary muscle to relax; avoid prolonged, continuous use of mobile phones and computers.

  1. Supplement nutrition to protect eye health

Eat more foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as lutein, such as carrots, spinach, blueberries, oranges, and nuts. These nutrients can protect the retina and crystalline lens, delaying the ageing of ocular tissues. At the same time, reduce the intake of high-sugar and high-fat foods to prevent high blood sugar from damaging ocular blood vessels.

It is recommended to have a comprehensive eye examination once a year after the age of 40, including visual acuity, intraocular pressure, crystalline lens, and fundus examinations. This not only accurately assesses the degree of presbyopia for timely adjustment of the correction plan but also screens for eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, ensuring early detection and treatment.

Presbyopia is not a minor issue, nor is wearing reading glasses the only helpless choice.
