The Top 5 Benefits of Wearing Glasses You Should Know!

Many nearsighted people are reluctant to wear glasses—some think they hurt their appearance; others worry that glasses will make their myopia worse. But that’s not true at all! Wearing glasses actually comes with plenty of benefits. Let’s break them down:

Benefits of Wearing Glasses

Corrects vision
For nearsighted people, light from distant objects can’t focus on the retina, making faraway things blurry. With glasses, you get clear images, effectively correcting your vision.

Reduces eye strain
Going nearsighted without glasses guarantees tired eyes, which only worsens your prescription over time. Wearing the right glasses cuts down on strain significantly.

Prevents and treats exotropia
When nearsighted people look at close objects, their eyes’ focusing ability weakens. Over time, the outer eye muscles can overpower the inner ones, causing the eye to turn outward (exotropia). Luckily, glasses can help correct this.

Stops eyeball protrusion
Teenagers’ eyes are still developing, and uncorrected “adjustment myopia” can easily turn into axial myopia (where the eye elongates). This is especially true for severe myopia, which often makes the eyeball bulge outward. But if you start wearing corrective glasses early, this can be reduced—or even prevented.

Prevents and treats amblyopia
Not wearing glasses when you’re nearsighted can lead to refractive amblyopia (lazy eye). But with the right glasses and consistent treatment, most people see their vision improve over time.

Common Myths About Wearing Glasses

Myth 1: Once you start wearing glasses, you can never take them off.
First, it’s important to know there’s “true myopia” and “pseudomyopia.” True myopia is hard to reverse. Pseudomyopia might improve, but it depends on how much of your vision issue is pseudomyopia. For example, if you’re 100 degrees nearsighted, only 50 might be pseudomyopia—glasses won’t fix that. Only 100% pseudomyopia has a chance of improving.

Myth 2: Watching TV makes myopia worse.
Done right, watching TV won’t worsen myopia—in fact, it might even slow down pseudomyopia. But you need good habits: sit far enough (5–6 times the TV’s diagonal length), and after an hour of reading/studying, take 5–10 minutes to watch TV without your glasses.

Myth 3: You must get glasses if your prescription is low.
Many think low myopia doesn’t need glasses unless you’re a driver or need sharp vision for work. But here’s the thing: eye exams test vision at 5 meters, but we rarely look that far in daily life—glasses are meant for seeing distant objects. Yet most teens keep their glasses on while studying, which means they’re using “distance glasses” for close-up work. This strains the eye muscles and worsens myopia.

Myth 4: Wearing glasses solves everything.
Glasses alone aren’t enough to stop myopia from getting worse. The key is: “Watch the distance for close-up work” and “Limit continuous close-up time.” Keep your eyes at least 33cm from books or your desk. Don’t read for more than an hour straight—take breaks, take off your glasses, and look far away to avoid overworking your eyes.
