Eye Gunk Spike? Could Signal Eye Issues
Eye Gunk Spike? Could Signal Eye Issues
That crusty "sleep" in your eyes when you wake up? It's normal – but sometimes it's trying to tell you something. A sudden change in your eye gunk's amount, color, or texture could signal an infection or allergy. Here's how to decode your eye discharge and know when it's time to see a doctor.
What Is “Eye Gunk”?
We all know “eye gunk”—that stuff in our eyes when we wake up. It varies in amount and color, and while not glamorous, it’s worth noticing. Sometimes, it hints at eye problems.
What’s in It?
“Eye gunk” is technically “ocular discharge.” It starts with meibomian glands, which secrete oil. This oil flows through openings near lash roots, coating the eye to lock in moisture.
Eye gunk forms when this oil mixes with old dead cells, dust, and tiny microbes on the eye’s surface.
When Eye Gunk Signals Trouble
A little morning gunk is normal—sign of healthy eyes. But watch for red flags: sudden increase, texture/color changes, or symptoms like itching, pain, foreign body feeling, light sensitivity, tearing, or redness. These can mean eye issues[1].
Types of Discharge & What They Mean
Ocular discharge comes in types, each hinting at issues[2]:
1. Yellow/Green Pus-Like Discharge
If sticky gunk glues eyelids shut, it’s likely a bacterial infection[3].
Dacryocystitis (tear sac inflammation) also causes this, usually only at the inner eye corner.
2. Watery Discharge
Thin, slightly sticky. With swollen, tender ear-front lymph nodes? May be a viral infection[4].
3. Sticky, Stringy Discharge
Like diluted glue—stretchy. Paired with itching, especially in pollen seasons (e.g., spring)? Could be allergic conjunctivitis[5].
4. Bloody Discharge
Pink/red-tinged. Often from eye trauma or acute viral infections.
Don’t Ignore Abnormal Gunk
Many brush off eye gunk, but unusual discharge or discomfort could mean trouble. See a doctor promptly!
How to Wipe Gunk Safely
Skip picking with fingers—it raises infection risk. Use a clean cotton swab, gauze, disposable face towel, or clean hands to gently wipe. Easy enough!
